Essential upgrades to the online catalogue

The university's online library catalogues will be off-line for an estimated two hours from 15:00 on Sunday, January 15th as some essential upgrades to the system are made. 

As our catalogue is hosted by the university, while this upgrade is taking place you will be unable to search the catalogue or access e-resources.

New acting director for the Institute of Classical Studies

Professor Mike Edwards has now taken up the Chair of Classics at Trinity St David’s, University of Wales, and has therefore given up the post of Director of the Institute of Classical Studies in London, after more than five years of distinguished service.  Professor John North has agreed to take on the post of Acting Director for the calendar year 2012.  For more details about him and the appointment, follow this link: http://www.sas.ac.uk/about-us/news/press-releases  We anticipate that a long-term appointment will be made early in 2013. 

Essential maintenance on Saturday, January 7th

On Saturday, January 7th, heating engineers will be coming to do some work in the archaeology room of the library. This will necessitate the removal of all of the desks in this room, and may lead to some disruption. The desks will be replaced on Monday morning.

Library hours over the Christmas period

The Library will close at 5:30pm on Friday 23rd December 2011 and reopen on Tuesday 3rd January 2012.

The last Saturday opening will be on the 17th of December 2011. Saturday openings will recommence on January 7th 2012.

Evening opening (Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays until 8pm) will end on December 15th 2011 and will re-start on Tuesday 10th January 2012.

We're back!

After a long hiatus, the Library has returned to the world of blogging! What have you missed?

•  The Library now shares the third floor (and the circulation desk) with the Institute of Historical Research Library, who have temporarily relocated here while their premises in the North Block are being refurbished. Their collection and staff are housed in what was previously the Senate House periodicals section, next door to us.
• The common room is now being used as a space for Senate House meetings and conferences. However, two new common rooms are available on either side of the ground floor of Senate House, conveniently next door to the café.
• Late Antique and Byzantine periodicals have been moved to their own dedicated section, adjacent to the books on these topics.
• The heating in the archaeology room is currently being improved.
• Our previous graduate trainee, Alice Milner, has finished her year at the library and is now pursuing a career in publishing with Penguin. A new trainee, Hannah Dingwall, who studied Literae Humaniores at the University of Oxford, started in August. We have also gained a new shelving assistant, Geri van Essen, last year's graduate trainee at the Institute of Historical Research, who is working with us while studying for an MA in the History of the Book with the Institute of English Studies at the University of London.
• The Library has a new furry friend...a mouse displaced by the renovation of the lifts! We've since repatriated him into the wild.

We named him "Minimus".

• And, of course, we have lots of new material, including new exchanges of Michmanim,  Archeologia in Liguria, Studi Ellenistici, Japan Studies in Classical Antiquity, Archaiologiko Ergo Kretes, and Histria Antiqua.
