Greg Woolf Welcomed as New Director of the Institute



The School of Advanced Studies has just announced that Greg Woolf has been appointed as the new Director of the Institute of Classical Studies, taking over from our current acting Director John North in January. The staff at the library, and we know the readers, would like to express our thanks to Professor North for all his work for the Institute and to congratulate Professor Woolf on his appointment.

Winnington-Ingram Trainee Position

Applications are now being accepted for our Graduate Trainee position here in the library. The successful candidate works alongside the library staff for a year to gain an insight into all aspects of librarianship; not to mention first look at all the new Classics books. You are also given the opportunity to attend training sessions and visit other libraries throughout the year to discover the aspects of the industry which interest you the most. Additionally you will inherit full charge of a certain (highly successful!) blog...

n.b. there is a salary- it's not one of those internships.

Opening hours during the Olympics and beyond


We will be open as usual during the Olympics.

That is:

Monday-Friday: 9:30am-6pm
Saturday: 10am-4:30pm


At 6pm on Friday, August 17th we will close for our annual summer break. The library will re-open at 9:30am on Monday, September 3rd. Evening openings will re-commence with the start of term. All loans taken out between now and August 17th will be due back on September 3rd.

We will also soon be welcoming a new graduate library trainee, so if you see a new face behind the library desk in the next few weeks, do say hello!

New acting director for the Institute of Classical Studies



Professor Mike Edwards has now taken up the Chair of Classics at Trinity St David’s, University of Wales, and has therefore given up the post of Director of the Institute of Classical Studies in London, after more than five years of distinguished service.  Professor John North has agreed to take on the post of Acting Director for the calendar year 2012.  For more details about him and the appointment, follow this link: http://www.sas.ac.uk/about-us/news/press-releases  We anticipate that a long-term appointment will be made early in 2013.

New member of staff

We welcome Katie Rose to the library staff as the new graduate trainee for the year 2008-09. She graduated from King's College London this year with a degree in Classics and we hope she will enjoy her time here at the library.

Secretary of the Roman Society

Today is Dr Helen Cockle's last day as Roman Secretary. We wish her well in her new part-time post as Reviews Editor for the Classical Association, a few doors down from her old office.

We also welcome Dr Fiona Haarer as the new Roman Secretary.
