The Library is maintained jointly with the Societies for the Promotion of Hellenic and Roman Studies and in association with the Institute of Classical Studies (University of London). It contains over 130,000 volumes, 22,000 bound volumes of periodicals, thereby bringing the overall total to almost 152,000 volumes. The Library has an international reputation as one of the world’s foremost Classics libraries.

Evening opening hours

Jacoby Online now live
Following the successful trial of Jacoby Online, the Library Committee decided to purchase Brill's New Jacoby and Die Fragmente der Griechischen Historiker. They are now available to use in the computer room - please book time from the Library desk.

New periodical - Groma
The Joint Library now receives Groma, from v. 1 (2007), as part of the exchange with the archaeology department of the Università degli Studi di Bologna. It is a publication of the Centro Studi per l'Archeologia dell'Adriatico and is concerned with the archaeology of Piceno, Dalmatia and Epirus.

Charles Elliott Slides
The Library has recently acquired the slide collection of the late Charles Richard Babington Elliott, who was Head of the Classics Department at Nottingham High School and spent his holidays visiting sites in Greece and Italy. There are over 17,000 slides in the collection, some of the most recent depicting the treasures of Thessaloniki Museum.

New periodical - AΛΣ
The Joint Library now subscribes to the periodical 'AΛΣ' the publication of the Society for the Promotion of Studies on Prehistoric Thera. See their website at http://theranstudies.santorini.net/index.php?id=311. At the moment we have issues 1-3 (2003-05). Articles are mainly in Greek with the odd article or summaries available in English - it varies with each issue.

Jacoby Online
The Library is currently trialling online access to Jacoby Online consisting of both 'Brill's New Jacoby' and 'Die Fragmente der Griechischen Historiker Parts I-III'.

According to the publishers, the New Jacoby contains:
- the online edition of the original three parts of Felix Jacoby’s monumental FGrHist giving instant and fully searchable access to the equivalent of more than 8,000 pages of print.
- new authors not in the original FGrHist;
- new readings of many of Jacoby’s Greek texts;
- new commentaries in English by contemporary scholars;
- for the first time commentary on the texts that Jacoby did not complete before his death;
- en face English translations of the Greek fragments and testimonia;
- an encyclopedia-style biography of the ancient author;
- and a regularly updated bibliography.

Requests for "cupboard"/rare books
Owing to the ongoing refurbishment of the South Block, access has been further restricted to the Library's rare book store and we regret it is no longer possible to fulfil ad hoc requests for these books.
Library staff will only be able to fetch books twice a day on weekdays. Please, therefore, ensure that you have placed your request for a "cupboard"/rare book by 9.45 in the morning or 1.45 in the afternoon. These are the items marked on the catalogue as Location: "ICLASS Cupboard".
We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

Welcome new students!

New electronic resource on Pompeii
A fantastic new resource for those researching Pompeii is now available at the Library.
'The World of Pompeii' edited by John J. Dobbins & Peter W. Foss contains essays on Pompeii, all by renowned Classicists and also contains a CD-ROM of very detailed maps of the sites at Pompeii and Herculaneum. These maps have been added to our computers - please ask one of our staff for advice on how to use this very useful program.
